Brexiteers make Twitter (burning) cross with bizarre KKK nickname

If you’re a group of middle-aged, right-wing white men, it’s probably advisable to stay away from any Ku Klux Klan imagery.

So whoever decided that the Brexiteers who turned up at Chequers on Sunday - IDS, Boris, Mogg and Steve Baker - were to be called ‘The Grand Wizards’ needs to give their heads a good wobble.

BBC political editor revealed the bizarre monicker in a tweet last night, predictably leading to a huge backlash.

Probably the pick of the reaction came from George Osborne - no friend of the ERG, of course - who tweeted: “I’m sorry, is this for real? Have the leaders of the hard Brexiteers just called themselves the same name as the leaders of the Ku Klux Klan?”

To make matters worse, Brexiteer sources tried to play down the row by informing Laura K that they hadn’t intended the nickname to be linked with the white-hood-wearing, cross-burning far-right group.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one eurosceptic claimed it had all been the brainchild of “an elderly f***wit” who had then decided to blab it to the political editor of the BBC.

One suspects it will not be used in future.
