Defence secretary gets heckled in the chamber… by his own phone
Watch: At least Gavin Williamson didn’t tell Siri to shut up and go away.
Last week, Conservative MPs were lining up to take pot shots at Gavin Williamson after the defence secretary allegedly threatened to topple the prime minister unless defence spending is increased by £20bn.
This week the anti-Williamson furore has died down a bit and angry Tory MPs have turned on Jacob Rees-Mogg instead.
So it fell to the defence secretary’s phone to stage an intervention while he was at the despatch box…
After Siri rudely revealed that it had found something on the web about Syrian democratic forces, John Bercow responded in typical fashion.
“What a very rum business that is," said the speaker.
"I’m not sure I’d call that an intervention. But I do apologise – it’s very rare that you’re heckled by your own mobile phone," remarked Williamson.
Meanwhile two Labour MPs on Twitter were marvelling the work of the defence secretary’s phone."
“What with all the Tory party infighting and fall outs even Siri is getting in on the act interrupting and heckling the defence secretary today," joshed Angela Rayner.
And David Lammy jibed: "If Siri doesn't understand you @GavinWilliamson what hope have the rest of us got?"
