George Osborne is 'really crazy', says Tory MP as Brexit coverage lands
Watch: Rory Stewart is not very happy with his old colleague.
One of the first Tories out of the traps to slam Theresa’s May long awaited final Brexit deal was Boris Johnson, who described it as “vassal state stuff”.
Jacob Rees Mogg, Iain Duncan Smith and Peter Bone were also quick to pile in. But it’s not just hard Brexiters who have expressed concern that the deal will leave the UK bound by European laws.
As is often the case, George Osborne took to Twitter today to push his paper’s front page. In a brutal summary of the prime minister's deal, it states: ‘EU takes back control’:
Presented with the Evening Standard’s coverage on the BBC’s PoliticsLive show, one Tory MP was distinctly unimpressed.
“This is really crazy stuff here. This is really crazy, really crazy. Because he’s taking unbelievable risk here,” said Remain-voting prisons minister Rory Stewart.
“Almost certainly what he’s doing here is increasing the chance of a no-deal, hard Brexit. He’s fantasising that by doing this he’s going to bring the people back into the European Union and it’s a really crazy gamble.”
The former chancellor’s latest salvo comes just over a year after he reportedly told people he wants May “chopped up in bags in my freezer”. Does Stewart really want to get on the wrong side of him?
