Theresa May's chief of staff thinks Tory Brexiteers are a bunch of idiots
Gavin Barwell came out fighting on Twitter after the PM's Brexit plan was savaged. Again.
Theresa May has been on the steps of Downing Street to hail the draft agreement on post-Brexit relations and insist that a deal "is within our grasp".
The political declaration outlines how UK-EU trade, security and other issues will work after Brexit. The prime minister later told MPs it was “right for the whole of the UK” and would deliver the Brexit people voted for.
But of course, plenty of MPs had a very different take on the document.
Responding in the Commons, Jeremy Corbyn labelled the draft agreement “waffle” and the “blindfolded Brexit we all feared”. Similarly, Vince Cable described it as an "agreement to have an agreement" that was "full of worryingly vague aspirations".
Yet it is the objections of the troublesome Tory Brexiteers that appear to have wound up the prime minister’s chief of staff the most.
Gavin Barwell stated on Twitter: “Classic straw man tactics from some MPs today criticising the Political Declaration because it is not a treaty when they know full well (or at least they should know) that the EU *cannot* sign a treaty setting out our future relationship until after we've left.”
Thankfully, one seasoned lobby journalist was on hand to decode what Barwell was really saying…
